Pećina Spring lies just above Gradina, as the old town of Vrana is known. Crystal-clear water emerges from a shady niche nestled in the rock, and continues its path towards Vrana Lake, irrigating orchards and fields on its path. The air temperature in the Pećina Spring is always 2 to 3 degrees lower than outside, offering visitors a pleasant retreat on hot summer days. The spring has played an important role since Roman times, as it was part of a 42-kilometre-long Roman aqueduct that supplied water to Zadar, alongside with two other Vrana springs, Biba and Subiba. Built during the reign of Emperor Trajan in the year 100, it was dedicated to nymphs, mythical beings and water tutelaries. According to the legend, a Vrana oracle once sat at the cave’s entrance, foreseeing the future by scooping water from the stream.
