On the sea by the lake

Pakoštane rests comfortably between the lake and the sea, the two bodies of water that have shaped its history. The locals lived closely connected with the fertile lands surrounding Vrana Lake, which fed many generations. As tourism developed, they turned to the sea and it gifts, but agriculture always remained in people’s hearts. The presence of well-cared-for gardens, homesteads, and small family farms serves as a clear indication of this. The story of Pakoštane begins in Bužak, the heart of the village, a small area that was home to the first inhabitants of Pakoštane. Tightly packed together, modest stone houses with doors that have never been locked tell the story of life and the hospitable people of this place. Nowadays, Pakoštane is a true Mediterranean tourist destination, pleasant for both living and vacationing. The parish church of the Ascension of the Lord, a stone structure influenced by Romanesque architecture and constructed from local stone sourced from the local quarry known as “Popova kava”, stands as the focal point of the town. The three islets of Pakoštane – Sveta Juština, Školj, and Babuljaš – serve as timeless protectors of the town, historically referred to as Vjera (Faith), Ufanje (Hope), and Ljubav (Love).
