9. Pakoštane-Prosika-Crkvine-Maškovića Han Cycling Trail

About the trail

This trekking route is 40.4 km long and begins in front of the main church in Pakoštane. Crossing the Adriatic Highway, it reaches Vrana Lake, follows its southern coastline, meandering alongside forests and olive groves and offering a view of the lake’s turquoise waters, before it reaches the Vrana Lake Nature Park Info Centre in Prosika, near the small port featuring a fishing house originating in the 19th century. It then continues along the northern shore, passing drystone walls built from karst, as well thick maquis shrubland, before ascending to Majdan Hill and descending to Maškovića Han, an Ottoman-era inn now converted into a hotel. From there, the route follows the edge of the Ornithological Reserve, home to hundreds of wetland bird species, before reaching the Crkvine Info Centre and returning to the main square in Pakoštane.

In the 18th century, Venetian officer Francesco Borelli was granted ownership of the Vrana estate along with its surrounding villages. Due to the spread of malaria from the wetlands, in 1770 he decided to dig the Prosika Canal to connect Vrana Lake with the sea, and the canal is now one of the features of this trail.
