We Took a Day Hike in Pakoštane and Discovered: Silence Has Its Own Story

A single day, good energy, and comfortable shoes — that’s all it took for Pakoštane to show us its quieter side. Instead of towels on the beach and busy summer crowds, we set out to explore the hiking trails that connect sea and lake, salty and sweet, the calm of pine forest, and the call of the open horizon. “Sweet‑salty adventure” may sound like a marketing phrase, but when you walk these paths, you realize it’s the most accurate description. Its spring and everything breathes naturally, without rush.

Between the Sea and the Lake

Our one‑day hiking trip begins in Pakoštane. We start from Janice Beach, where the sound of the sea immediately sets the pace for the day. We walk slowly and without hurry, climbing up a low earth ridge and following a well‑worn path. This route winds through flat fields and shaded pine forest, kissed by the gentle breeze from the sea. On the left, vast fields and flower-filled meadows, and on the right, the blue shimmer of the Adriatic Sea slowly unfolds. Silence is broken only by birdsong. There are no trail signs — but you feel a deep connection with nature under your feet, with the roots of the pines curling gently through the earth, and with the expansive view toward the sea and Vrgada Island. After a pleasant walk through the forest, we arrive in Drage and continue onto the Grebenska Trail, which leads up to the Čelinka Viewpoint. Here the terrain becomes more rugged and slightly steeper, with rocky earth and low vegetation underfoot. When we reach the top, we’re greeted by something extraordinary: from this panoramic point above Drage, nature’s powerful contrasts are laid out before you — the deep blue sea with islands like Vrgada and the Kornati archipelago on one side, and the turquoise expanse of Vransko Lake stretching between the Ravni Kotari interior and the coast on the other. It’s a 360° view where sea, lake, fields, and forest combine into a single, unforgettable landscape. Here there’s no infrastructure, no crowds — just pure nature and quiet. Čelinka is the perfect place for a short rest, a memorable photo, or simply a moment of standing still while you watch the distances merge into one harmonious scene.

From Čelinka, the trail continues — not along the lake’s edge, but through the fields back toward Pakoštane along the Jezero Trail. The landscape calms again: smooth trails and cultivated land that bear witness to humanity’s long connection with this space. Occasionally a house appears, but most of the path is accompanied only by breeze and birdsong.

Čelinka Viewpoint reveals everything that makes the Pakoštane area unique — on one side the turquoise waters of Vrana Lake, on the other the deep blue of the sea and the islands. Fresh and salt in a single view. Here, nature is not just a backdrop, but a living contrast that shows the strength of this landscape — a meeting point of land and water, silence and wind, old fields and distant horizons. Čelinka is a place where differences are not opposites, but harmony.

By the end of the day, our legs may have felt tired, but our minds were refreshed. This hike showed us a side of Pakoštane you won’t find from the beach — green, quiet, and rooted in nature. We’re already planning to return, because the Pakoštane region still has many trails waiting to be discovered, climbs to explore, and stories to walk through. Next time? Maybe the Cave Trail, or the route up to Kamenjak — there’s always more to see, hear, and feel.
