DISCOVER

Vrana, an awakened witness of the past

The village of Vrana, located in the hinterland of Vrana Lake, is surrounded by the remains of a glorious past, reflecting both ecclesiastical and secular authority from the medieval era. Situated between the sea and the well-inundated hinterland, surrounded by fields, Vrana attracted numerous influential figures of its time, and changed hands quite often. Escaping the Ottoman conquerors, a part of the residents emigrated to nearby islands, primarily Murter, whereas others left for Venice, and formed a colony there. Vrana remains a place embraced by the beauty of fertile fields, spring-fed waters, and pastel lake vistas, with breathtaking viewpoints nearby. Today, it stands as a sought-after destination year-round for those in search of tranquility and natural beauty.

Cultural heritage
As summer twilight falls, the air fills with the scent of earth and hay, echoed by the rhythmic clang of the blacksmith’s hammer. Anticipation rises before battle, and the spirit of the Middle Ages awakens in Vrana. As the fiery sun sets, the rich heritage of ancient crafts and local delicacies welcomes the night. Thus begin the Days of the Knights of Vrana.

Nature
Water is the lifeblood of Vrana, a place rich in its abundance. Throughout history, the value of Vrana’s water has been recognised, as it fed the land, the people, and the cities. A Roman aqueduct once carried water from Vrana’s springs, productive even now, all the way to Zadar. The remnants of this ancient aqueduct can still be seen along the road from Vrana to Zadar.

Events in Vrana

The main summer event in Vrana is Dani vitezova vranskih (“Days of Vrana Knights”), during which the ghosts of the past and the ancient Middle Ages requicken. In a splendid stage play, the historical unit of the Knights of Vrana brings to life the famous monks and Knights Templar who once inhabited the old town of Vrana. The aromas of local cuisine and the rustle of medieval crafts become more and more noticeable as the night grows thicker. A battle is expected, accompanied by magical fairy appearances.
